Quick Quizzes look different in fifth grade than they did in fourth grade. The main difference is that in fifth grade students write their answers on their quick quiz paper instead of looking at the questions on a card and writing their answers on a separate paper. Because there is less work transferring data around, our quick quizzes have 100 questions instead of 50.
Students have 5 minutes to work 100 basic math fact questions. Our first quick quiz has been a fairly easy quiz. The goal here is to get fifth graders familiarized with the routine and ready to tackle more challenging questions (like 7x8 instead of 6x1) already confident in their quick quiz routines.
The quick quiz challenges every learner. For some learners it is enough just to tackle the task of a timed assignment. For other students they are answering as quickly as they can and are not completing 100 questions. For now, that is ok. Other students are answering 200+ questions in five minutes. They are doubling their initial answers (100 questions) and then they go back and halve the initial answer. At the beginning of the year, I am looking for student scores to improve almost daily and as we progress through the year they will need to study math facts at home to increase their score. For now, everyone is doing very well!
