At the heart of I Love Math Day is a panel discussion where students get to meet and ask questions of adults who love math. We are delighted that this year our panelists will be:
Faye Boatright:
Ms Boatright has had a 20 year involvement with Municipal Finance on Wall Street, working for Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. Her work has helped cities and states build airports, roads, school buildings, bridges, dormitories. Currently she is Chief Operating Officer of a new municipal bond insurance firm called The BondFactor Company.
Ms Boatright did her undergraduate work at Stanford and her MBA at Wharton. Faye's father was an actuary and her mother was a Middle School math teacher. Her son, Marcus Wilson, is in the Fourth Grade, and he loves math too!
Hoyun Cho:
Mr. Cho is currently working on his Ph.D in Math Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He did his undergraduate work at Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan, and his MA in Math Education at Western Michigan University. His thesis will study the use of cartoons in the classroom, as teaching and assessment tools!
Mr. Cho taught middle school and high school mathematics in Korea, before coming to America for further education. He has been published in several journals, and has manuscripts in preparation and/or review for several more. His daughter, Ohanna is a Trees student at the Nest.
Sonja Kerlen Bellino:
Mrs. Bellino is a Family Nurse Practitioner with primary interests in women's health, prenatal care and pediatrics. She completed her BS in Nursing at Rutgers and her MS in Nursing at Mississippi University for Women. She has had more than 20 years experience at Hackensack Medical Center, Cary Christian Health Center and St. Joseph's Medical Center. She has served as an Adjunct Faculty member at Columbia University and New York Medical College.
Mrs. Bellino has been published in professional journals, and has been active in medical missions and health-related travel to Malawi, Uganda, Guatemala, Honduras, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Ecuador, and Dominican Republic. Mrs. Bellino uses math in her hobbies as well: sailing, biking, backpacking and chess.
Students in Grades 6 through 8 will attend the math panel at 1pm. You are welcome to join us in the Community Room! In addition, during the afternoon on the 14th, panelists will visit every classroom to discuss the mathematics that children are learning, and answer questions. Every student has a chance to meet one more adult who loves math. The panelists will present a book for each class library when they visit.
