Fifth graders are starting to think about decimals. Last term we conquered long division and multidigit multiplication. During mini-term we will take the mathematical procedures and concepts we learned last term and apply them to decimals. We will think about place value and the importance of knowing where a digit is located in a number.
Fifth graders have created fliers for imaginary stores. In their fliers they list prices for objects their store sells. Fifth graders are given a budget and then are asked to buy objects and keep a running tally of their remaining funds. Students are working with decimals and approximation.
We will make our shopping simulation more complex with sales (50% off) and sales tax. Finding percents of whole numbers in another important skill for fifth graders to master.
