4s, 3s, 2s, and 1s
As students eagerly anticipate Thanksgiving break, teachers carefully prepare progress reports (and eagerly await Thanksgiving break). We contemplate students progress towards mastery and their mastery of concepts, terms, and procedures we learned over the first term.
We look at a variety of evidence and assessments to understand how much and at what level students understand and can apply what they learned. We communicate your child's progress through his/her narrative and also through their progress report. You will receive the progress report in the mail after Thanksgiving break.
I wanted to take a moment to clarify and define what 4s, 3s, 2s, and 1s mean.
4- Higher Application- Students are taking what they have learned in class, applying it to every day life and coming up with new ideas based on what they learned in class. If students have achieved higher application, they are able to peer tutor. Meaning that they are able to break apart a concept and creatively apply the parts of the concept to their peer's background knowledge.
3- Mastery- Students understand and can put in their own words 80% or more of what was taught in class. Students are participating fully in procedures, activities and practice times that will enhance their understanding of academic concepts.
2-Progress Towards Mastery- Students are able to recite what we have learned, they are not yet able to fully explain a concept in their own terms. They will need to continue working diligently in their practice work, seeking teacher and peer guidance.
1- Minimal Progress Towards Mastery- Student is showing little effort or care in a subject area and does not seek out teacher or peer assistance.
