This year we are starting our study of mathematics by learning the traditional algorithm for multiplication and division. I made this choice for our curriculum based on the needs I noticed in fifth grade students. I saw that we needed to build confidence and face the algorithms that were causing us fear.
Students are working in whole group, small group and peer tutoring situations to learn and rehearse their algorithms. We are developing strategies to help us remember where to record our numbers and we are reminding ourselves of what we already know.
Fifth graders are building efficiency and confidence.
